Why I Ditched Microsoft Office for Google Drive

Google Drive

Google Drive is a free online cloud storage service to designed store and edit your documents, pictures, videos, drawings, spreadsheets, etc.  Go to Drive

Price

Currently Microsoft Office 365 is sold for $69.99/yr. Google Drive comes with 15GB free with your gmail account and to upgrade is only 1.99/mo for 100GB. Microsoft office cost about three times as much!

Sharing

Perhaps the best feature on Google drive is the sharing functionality. The drive makes it easy to share your document and even allow other users to edit the document. Imagine how simple group work can be without e-mailing and downloading every file each time.

Security

One of the most frustrating times in my life was when my laptop shut off in the middle of writing a paper in Microsoft Word and I lost all my information. I still remember the rage. The best thing about google drive is it saves in real-time so if you forget to save no big deal. That alone was reason enough for me.

Popular Applications
  • Microsoft Word vs Google Docs
  • Excel vs Sheets
  • PowerPoint vs Slides

File Storage

To save space on your computer, you can upload your documents to the drive and simply download the file when you have use for it. Everything is saved in one location making it easier to access your files when you need them. Google drive can also be downloaded to your computer if you'd rather use the windows file system library.

Mobile

The drive has mobile apps available on Android, iOS, and even the Windows Phone(although its better to use OneDrive on Windows). Here you can view and edit your files and not to mention downloading and uploading between devices.

I, too, am a fan of Google Drive! I've considered ditching office, but there are a lot of capabilities that drive doesn't offer (formatting stuff mostly). Do you happen to know how well Drive files allow you to work offline? I hear it can be done, but haven't really looked into it.

PS: Cool blog, Erin!

Hey Allie,

For formatting I think you can export as any format I remember I would just export things as a pdf if I wanted to keep the format and I notice most places accept pdfs. Thanks for visiting I appreciate it :)

Here are the instructions on how to work offline:

Edit Google Drive documents offline

You can read and edit your saved Google Drive documents when you’re offline. To enable offline mode, connect your Chromebook to the Internet, then follow the steps below.

Enable Google Drive offline
Open Google Drive either by clicking the Drive icon or by going to drive.google.com while you are online. The sync process will begin automatically.
Look for a notification at the lower right corner of your screen to see how many of your documents have synced. Remember that you must have at least one saved document stored in Google Drive to use offline.
After Google Drive is finished syncing, you can access your documents offline. Any edits you make to documents while you are offline will be synced the next time you’re online.
To see a list of the documents you have open in Google Drive, click the Drive icon. If you currently don’t have any Google documents open, clicking the Drive icon will take you to drive.google.com directly.
Disable Google Drive offline
To disable Google Drive offline and remove the files from your Chromebook, follow the steps below:

Click the Launcher icon apps list button from the shelf, then select the Drive icon.
Click the Files app settings icon gear icon in the upper-right corner and select "Stop using Offline Docs."
